Would you like to drive an emigrant trail from its beginning to end? Would you like to see and vicariously experience some of what the mid-1800’s travelers saw and felt? If so, you need the Emigrant Trails West Series of Guidebooks or Driving Guides to the emigrant trails written by Trails West volunteers. These guides will allow almost anyone with a modern SUV to explore many scenic roads both on and off pavement. Many families have been enjoying these guides for years and it’s a great way to spend a day or more driving through some beautiful country. A list of our guides is below and a map showing the approximate trail locations.
Trail Guides, Driving Guides & Updates
There are links to each of the 18 listed Publications. There are 8 Trail Guides, 10 Driving Guides and several Guide Updates. When we at Trails West learn of a serious error in one of our Guides or some kind of material change in the area through which the trails pass, we will keep you informed by making Guide Updates available. The updates will be found at the bottom of each publication in our list. If you are using one of our guides out in the field and find an error, please let us know about it. Google Maps
The California Trail Interpretive Center has provided a series of Google maps showing the locations of many of the Trails West markers. Be advised that many of the markers are in remote locations and may be far from fuel, food, water, etc. Additionally, many may require a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle to safely drive to them, and some are located on private property. Your best guide to them are the guidebooks referenced below.
